말[言語], 사회의 변화를 읽는 한 창

(에드먼튼=김상현) 말, 또는 언어가 사회의 변화를 드러내는 한 신호라는 데는 의문의 여지가 없습니다. 다만 그 말과 언어에 촉각을 곤두세우는 사람이 많지 않을 뿐이지요. 엇, 이런 말이 이렇게 널리 쓰이네, 라고 깜짝 깜짝 놀라곤 하는데, 바로 그 때가 말의 변화, 더 나아가 그 사회의 변화를 표나게 드러내는 순간이라고 봅니다.

12월입니다. 연말이 되면 빠짐없이 나오는 것이 '리스트'(list)입니다. 올해의 좋은 책 10선(혹은 20선, 100선), 올해의 기억할 만한 사건 사고 10가지, 올해의 히트 상품 50가지, 올해의 인기 영화 10선, 올해의 베스트 드레서 10명 등등 그 목록을 열거하자면 숨이 다 가쁠 지경입니다. 

제가 그중 상대적으로 더 관심을 갖는 리스트는 말입니다. 2009년에 가장 유행한 말, 또는 2009년에 새로 나온 말, 또는 2009년을 규정할 수 있음직한 대푯말 등등.

저는 이 목록을 보고 잠시 어리둥절했습니다. 한 인터넷 전문가(@estima7)께서는 이것이 '급등검색어'의 개념으로 묶은 게 아니냐고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런지도 모르겠습니다. 분명한 것은 그 결과가 지극히 미국적이라는 점입니다. 상위 3개와 6위를 뺀다면 한국 사람들에게는 "허~?" 하고 고개를 갸우뚱할 법합니다. 빙의 주요 이용자가 미국사람이라는 반증인지도 모르겠습니다. 아무튼 마이클 잭슨의 급사가 그야말로 세계 언론을 들끓게 했고, 트위터가 폭발적인 인기를 모았다는 점만은 분명해 보입니다. 돼지독감이 수많은 이들에게 두려움을 주는 것도 분명합니다 (요즘은 H1N1이라는 이름으로 더 자주 불리는 듯합니다).

3. 글로벌 랭귀지 모니터(Global Language Monitor)라는 데가 고른 단어와 표현은 앞의 두 목록보다 훨씬 더 구체적이어서 관심이 갑니다. 우리 사회 - 실은 북미 사회 -가 어떻게 변화해가는지를 짚어보는 일종의 리트머스 시험지 같습니다 (사실은 이 기관의 권위나 신뢰성에 의문을 제기하는 이들도 많습니다. 따라서 일종의 '참고 사이트' 정도로만 봐주는 게 안전하겠습니다). 트위터, 오바마, H1N1, 뱀파이어 같은 단어들이 상위에 올라와 있고, 언론이 직조해낸 유행어도 잘 정리되어 있습니다. 어떻게 생각하시는지요? 올 한해에 이런 일들이 있었구나, 라고 고개를 끄덕이게 되지 않습니까?
